Italy · Aosta Valley · Matterhorn Ski Paradise

Cervinia. High-altitude skiing between Italy and Switzerland.

A complete Cervinia guide: 160 km in Italy, the Zermatt link, Ventina, sectors, bases, hotels and access.

Colorado curation

Colorado combines altitude, accommodation and logistics for experiencing Cervinia and the Matterhorn at the right pace.

Valle d’Aosta · Monte Cervino

Altitude, long pistes and two countries in one ski area.

Breuil-Cervinia sits in an open valley at 2,050 metres beneath the Italian face of the Matterhorn. Its altitude supports a long season and wide pistes that are especially attractive to intermediates.

Its defining feature is the link with Zermatt: an international journey on snow expanding the area to around 360 km. The experience, however, depends on weather, wind and careful timing.

The local pass covers Cervinia and Valtournenche; the international pass adds Zermatt.

Colorado curation

The best journey is about more than altitude.

Cervinia offers snow, scenery and extensive skiing with a strong balance between experience and investment. In return, the village is more functional than historic and the mountain can be affected by wind.

Colorado matches the hotel, departure point and technical profile to reduce transfers and decide when the international pass genuinely makes sense.

Mountain sectors

Five essential experiences.

01

Plan Maison · Fornet · Bontadini

Cervinia’s most accessible core combines wide, progressive and sunny pistes with constant Matterhorn views. It is the best introduction to the mountain for families and intermediates.

02

Cime Bianche · Plateau Rosà

The high-altitude axis reaches the Swiss border and delivers the full high-mountain experience. Wind exposure makes lift operations especially important on cross-border days.

03

Ventina

The signature descent starts around Plateau Rosà and returns to Cervinia through a long, panoramic sequence. It is most enjoyable for confident intermediates with good stamina.

04

Valtournenche

The Italian link descends to a more traditional base through woodland and long pistes. It makes an excellent exploration day, though the return depends on the final lifts.

05

Cieloalto

A smaller, more technical and quieter sector above the village entrance. It appeals to experienced skiers in good conditions, but is not the primary family area.

Choosing your base

Where should you stay in Cervinia?

01

Centre · Cretaz

The most convenient area for restaurants, shops and access to the Cretaz pistes. It works particularly well for guests who want to walk and enjoy the village atmosphere.

02

Bardoney · Plan Maison

Close to the main gondolas and the Plan Maison departure, it reduces morning logistics. The precise hotel location determines whether access is genuinely walkable or needs a short shuttle.

03

Giomein

An elevated, quiet area with good ski-in/ski-out options. Reaching the centre may involve walking downhill, a shuttle or taxi depending on the property and conditions.

04

Cieloalto

A panoramic, residential base away from the central activity. It can offer a strong balance of space and value when local mobility is planned carefully.

05

Valtournenche

A lower, more traditional and economical village linked to the ski area by lift. It is an interesting alternative for guests happy to stay outside Cervinia and not prioritising a daily Zermatt crossing.

Selected accommodation

From the centre to the Giomein pistes.

Colorado compares practical lift access, shuttle, rooms, spa and evening routine before recommending accommodation.

01

Hotel Hermitage Relais & Châteaux

A classic five-star property in a secluded setting, with highly personalised service, dining and Matterhorn views. Its shuttle coordinates access to the lifts and village centre.

02

Saint Hubertus Resort

Alpine-design suites and apartments, a full spa and an intimate atmosphere. It is particularly appealing to families or stays where space and privacy matter.

03

Cervino – VRetreats

A contemporary upscale resort at the entrance to Cervinia, with an extensive spa and full facilities. Its location calls for shuttle planning for lifts and the centre.

04

Excelsior Planet

A family-run hotel in the centre near Cretaz, known for hospitality, dining and convenience. It is a balanced choice for couples and families.

05

Principe delle Nevi

A contemporary piste-side option in Giomein with highly convenient snow access and a more social atmosphere. Its distance from the centre should be considered for evenings.

06

Les Neiges d’Antan

A sophisticated, secluded chalet-hotel outside the village core, with a strong wellness and dining experience. It suits guests who prefer staying at the hotel after skiing.

Cervinia ↔ Zermatt

The crossing is a privilege—not a daily guarantee.

Reaching Switzerland on skis transforms the day, but requires confident intermediate ability, an early start and constant attention to operations. Strong winds can close the link even when lower pistes remain open.

For mixed-ability groups, it is better to plan the crossing for a specific day and retain local alternatives. The road journey between Zermatt and Cervinia is long and complex.

Arrival and mobility

Turin is closer; Milan offers more flights.

From Turin, the 118 km transfer takes around 1 hour 40 minutes. Milan Malpensa is 171 km away and usually takes a little over two hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

The closest railway station is Châtillon–Saint-Vincent, followed by bus or transfer up the valley. For an upscale journey, private transport simplifies luggage and hotel arrival.

FAQ

Before choosing Cervinia.

Is Cervinia good for beginners?+

Yes. There are progressive areas at Cretaz and Plan Maison, plus many wide pistes. Altitude and cold call for breaks and suitable equipment, especially for children.

Is it easy to ski from Cervinia to Zermatt?+

The crossing is signposted and suitable for confident intermediates, but it is long and depends on wind, visibility and lift operations. An early start and return timing are essential.

Can I visit Zermatt without skiing?+

Yes. The Matterhorn Alpine Crossing provides a panoramic cable-car journey for pedestrians when operations and the selected ticket allow. The excursion takes most of a day.

Is Cervinia suitable for snowboarders?+

Yes, particularly for riders who enjoy long, open pistes. Some connecting sections can be flat, while wind and international-link closures also require attention.

Which airport is most convenient?+

Turin is the closest, around 118 km away. Milan Malpensa often offers more international options and is approximately 171 km away; the best choice depends on flights and transfer arrangements.
