Banff Sunshine. Snow, altitude and the Rockies.

A complete Banff Sunshine guide: its three mountains, where to stay, selected hotels, family planning and access via Calgary.

Colorado curation

With more than 3,500 acres, a long season and up to nine metres of annual snowfall, Sunshine combines high-alpine terrain with Banff town life inside one of Canada’s most iconic national parks.

The Colorado perspective

High altitude.
Natural snow.
The Canadian Rockies.

Banff Sunshine combines an unusually long season with open alpine terrain, natural snow and the scenery of Banff National Park. Its three mountains work for different abilities without losing the destination’s high-mountain identity.

The decisive choice is where to stay: Banff brings town life and access to the full SkiBig3; Sunshine Mountain Lodge delivers rare ski-in/ski-out immersion inside the national park.

Three mountain personalities

A different mountain
for every stage.

Sunshine is not a single face: Standish, Lookout and Goat’s Eye change the difficulty, exposure and rhythm of the day.

01

Learning and progression

Mount Standish

The gentlest side of Sunshine, with greens, approachable blues, natural features and the main learning areas. A comfortable starting point for beginners and families.

02

High alpine and big views

Lookout Mountain

Wide terrain above the treeline, the Great Divide Express crossing Alberta and British Columbia, and access to Delirium Dive when the controlled freeride zone is open.

03

Longer and more technical

Goat’s Eye Mountain

The first gondola stop serves sustained descents, steeper pitches and strong terrain for confident intermediates and advanced skiers. Wolverine adds more family-friendly options.

Where to stay

Banff town life.
Sunshine immersion.

Banff is the most versatile base: it concentrates hotels, dining, shopping and après-ski, while free resort shuttles simplify mountain days. Staying at Sunshine swaps that variety for first tracks, silence and a true slopeside routine.

Planning the journey

Calgary, Banff and the mountain.

  • Calgary International Airport (YYC): approximately 135 km from Sunshine.
  • Banff town: approximately 18 km from the resort, with a free daily ski shuttle.
  • The gondola carries guests from the parking base to the alpine village; allow for this step in the morning routine.
  • A national park pass is required, and SkiBig3 makes it possible to combine Sunshine, Lake Louise and Mt. Norquay.

Practical questions

Before choosing
your base.

Should I stay in Banff or on the mountain?+

Banff offers restaurants, shopping, bars and access to all three SkiBig3 resorts. Sunshine Mountain Lodge is best for ski-in/ski-out immersion and first tracks, with a much quieter evening rhythm.

Is Sunshine good for beginners?+

Yes. Mount Standish has dedicated learning terrain and gentle progression. The destination becomes even stronger for mixed groups because Lookout and Goat’s Eye add abundant intermediate and advanced terrain.

What makes Sunshine different?+

Its high alpine setting, long non-glacial season, abundant natural snow and terrain spread across three mountains—and two Canadian provinces—give it a distinctive character.

How many nights should I stay?+

Seven to nine nights work well when combining Sunshine, Lake Louise and Mt. Norquay. For a Sunshine-focused visit, five to seven nights can be sufficient.

Do I need a car?+

Usually not when staying in Banff. Sunshine operates a free daily shuttle from several town stops, and airport transfers connect Calgary with Banff. A car adds flexibility but also winter-driving and parking considerations.

Which airport should I use?+

Calgary International Airport (YYC) is the main gateway. Sunshine is approximately 135 km from the airport, while Banff town is slightly closer.
