France · Val Thorens

Altitude, snow and 600 km of possibility.

A complete Val Thorens guide: mountain, Belleville valley, access and selected 3-, 4- and 5-star hotels.

Colorado curation

At 2,300 metres, Val Thorens combines ski-in/ski-out efficiency, high-altitude snow and direct access to the 600 km of Les 3 Vallées. Colorado matches the base, hotel and logistics to each traveller.

01

Who it suits

Families, groups, snowboarders and skiers who prioritise altitude, snow and convenience.

02

The mountain

150 km in Val Thorens–Orelle and access to the 600 km of Les 3 Vallées.

03

The valley

Val Thorens, Les Menuires and Saint-Martin offer very different experiences.

The Colorado perspective

Altitude first.
Skiing without
compromise.

At 2,300 metres, Val Thorens was designed around skiing. Slopes meet the village, the season is long and the high-altitude terrain of Val Thorens–Orelle connects directly with the immense Les 3 Vallées.

The Colorado selection considers more than stars: slope access, lesson meeting points, sunshine, village gradient and the return route at the end of a 3 Vallées day.

The mountain

High, open and immense.

  • 150 km in Val Thorens–Orelle and 600 km across connected Les 3 Vallées.
  • 99% of the local terrain above 2,000 metres, with a high point at 3,230 metres.
  • Cime Caron, Peclet, Plein Sud, Boismint and Orelle create distinct daily sectors.
  • Fast crossings towards Méribel and Les Menuires for long itineraries across the domain.

Choosing a base

One valley.
Four very
different rhythms.

Altitude, village character, price and daily ski ambition determine whether Val Thorens, Les Menuires or Saint-Martin is the right address.

Where to stay

Choose the altitude.
Then the atmosphere.

01

Val Thorens · 2,300 m

Europe's highest ski resort and the most snow-secure base in Les 3 Vallées. Predominantly ski-in/ski-out, compact and energetic, it is ideal for travellers who put skiing first.

02

Les Menuires · 1,850 m

A highly practical and family-friendly base with broad accommodation choice, direct access to the Belleville valley and generally more moderate pricing than Val Thorens.

03

Saint-Martin-de-Belleville · 1,450 m

The valley's most traditional village: stone, wood, celebrated dining and a slower rhythm. It connects to Les 3 Vallées, but returning late from distant sectors requires discipline.

04

Orelle · about 900 m

Gateway from the Maurienne side to high-altitude skiing and Pointe du Bouchet. Useful for day access and specific itineraries, but not equivalent to staying in Val Thorens village.

Practical questions

Before choosing
your hotel.

Why choose Val Thorens?+

For altitude, snow reliability and maximum ski efficiency. Most accommodation is on or very close to the slopes, and the resort provides direct access to the full 600 km of Les 3 Vallées.

Val Thorens or Méribel?+

Val Thorens is higher, more ski-in/ski-out and more sport-oriented. Méribel offers a more traditional architectural atmosphere and the most central position for balancing Courchevel and the Belleville valley.

Is it suitable for beginners?+

Yes. There are dedicated learning carpets and gentle sectors close to the village. The hotel's position relative to the lesson meeting point should still guide the choice.

How many nights should I stay?+

Seven nights are ideal for exploring the scale of Les 3 Vallées. Four or five nights can work for experienced skiers with a central ski-in/ski-out hotel and carefully planned transfers.

How do I get there?+

Moûtiers is the nearest railway station. Geneva and Lyon are the main international airports; winter traffic on the final mountain road makes a private transfer and generous time margin advisable.

Fabrício's perspective.

Colorado Experience — Snow since 2012

Val Thorens delivers snow and convenience, but the hotel's exact position within the sloping village matters. When crossing Les 3 Vallées, an early start and disciplined return time make a real difference.
