Italy · Alto Adige · Dolomites

Val Gardena. Three villages in the heart of the Dolomites.

A complete Val Gardena guide: Ortisei, Selva, Santa Cristina, Sella Ronda, Seceda, Saslong, hotels and access.

Colorado curation

Colorado combines the right village, mountain and accommodation for experiencing the Dolomites at your pace.

Alto Adige · Dolomitas

Three villages. One of the Dolomites’ finest mountains.

Val Gardena combines Ortisei’s elegance, Selva’s sporting convenience and Santa Cristina’s central position. The result is a remarkably complete journey for families, intermediates and mixed-ability groups.

Village choice changes the experience: Seceda and Alpe di Siusi favour Ortisei; Sella Ronda and Passo Gardena favour Selva; Saslong and Col Raiser make Santa Cristina a strategic middle ground.

Colorado curation

The right base depends on how you travel.

Val Gardena is particularly strong for intermediates, with variety, monumental scenery, excellent mountain huts and links that create very different ski days. Families also find excellent progression when ski school and hotel are selected together.

The most common mistake is choosing by hotel name alone. Here, position relative to lifts, ski bus, school and village significantly changes the journey’s rhythm.

Mountain sectors

Four essential experiences.

01

Seceda · La Longia

The signature landscape above Ortisei combines panoramic pistes, access towards Col Raiser and La Longia, a long descent into the valley. Returns and links should be planned around the group’s ability.

02

Ciampinoi · Saslong

The sporting axis between Selva and Santa Cristina combines varied pistes and the historic World Cup Saslong. Confident intermediates thrive here, while black sections require technique and careful route choices.

03

Dantercepies · Passo Gardena

From Selva, this is the natural gateway to the Sella Ronda and Alta Badia. Wind, visibility, crowds and timing change the experience, so an early start is part of the plan.

04

Alpe di Siusi

Sunny, open and progressive terrain, particularly attractive for families, beginners and relaxed ski days. Ortisei provides the most direct gondola access.

Choosing your village

Ortisei, Selva or Santa Cristina?

01

Ortisei · Urtijëi

The most complete town for walking, with shops, restaurants and direct access to Seceda and Alpe di Siusi. Excellent for families, couples and non-skiers; guests prioritising the Sella Ronda should account for the transfer to the circuit.

02

Selva · Sëlva

The most practical base for direct access to the Sella Ronda, Ciampinoi and Dantercepies. It has a sportier, livelier feel and a strong choice of hotels close to the pistes.

03

Santa Cristina · Santa Crestina

Its central position favours Saslong, Monte Pana and Col Raiser. It offers a balanced compromise between mountain access, tranquillity and movement around the valley.

Selected accommodation

The right address for every pace.

Colorado compares position, shuttle, lift access, rooms, wellness and group profile before recommending accommodation.

01

Gardena Grödnerhof · Ortisei

An upscale central hotel with spa, dining and extensive service, suited to guests combining village life with sophisticated comfort.

02

ADLER Spa Resort Dolomiti · Ortisei

A traditional address with extensive wellness facilities and a convenient position for walking around town and reaching Ortisei’s lifts.

03

Hotel Montchalet · Ortisei

An intimate boutique hotel with spacious suites and personalised service, ideal for couples and families who value privacy.

04

Granbaita Dolomites · Selva

A sophisticated hotel with spa in central Selva, balancing mountain access with restaurants within walking distance.

05

Hotel Tyrol · Selva

Refined Alpine hospitality, strong dining and a welcoming atmosphere in the village centre, supporting a car-free stay.

06

Alpenroyal Grand Hotel · Selva

A larger resort with wellness facilities and wide views, for guests prioritising facilities and tranquillity.

07

Monte Pana Dolomites Hotel · Santa Cristina

A peaceful mountain base, particularly appealing to families and guests who value starting the day close to the pistes.

08

Hotel Touring Dolomites · Santa Cristina

A contemporary village-centre option with convenient access to local services and a useful position for exploring different sectors.

Sella Ronda

A circuit to plan, not merely mark on a map.

The circuit around the Sella massif can be skied in both directions and crosses Gardena, Campolongo, Pordoi and Sella passes. It is a panoramic journey requiring an early start, confident intermediate ability and attention to final-lift times.

On windy, low-visibility or busy days, a local itinerary may be better. Colorado places the Sella Ronda on the right day and defines alternatives for the group.

Arrival and mobility

Bolzano and Innsbruck are the closest gateways.

Val Gardena is around 40 km from Bolzano and 115 km from Innsbruck. Verona, Venice, Bergamo, Milan and Munich broaden the options according to flight schedules and the wider itinerary.

A private transfer is usually the most comfortable solution. Rail arrivals can combine stations such as Bolzano, Bressanone or Ponte Gardena with a bus or final transfer. In the valley, ski buses and hotel position reduce the need for a car.

FAQ

Before choosing Val Gardena.

Is Val Gardena good for beginners?+

Yes, particularly in village learning areas and Alpe di Siusi. Families should match the hotel to the ski school and lesson meeting point.

What does skiing the Sella Ronda mean?+

It is a day circuit around the Sella massif, clockwise or anticlockwise, crossing four passes and several valleys. It does not mean all 500 km are skied in one journey.

Which village is best for the Sella Ronda?+

Selva offers the most direct access. Santa Cristina is a strong central compromise, while Ortisei prioritises Seceda, Alpe di Siusi and town life.

Do Val Gardena and Alpe di Siusi share a ski pass?+

The Val Gardena/Alpe di Siusi pass covers both areas. Dolomiti Superski expands access to other zones, but physical links and logistics still matter.

Which airport should I choose?+

Bolzano is closest, while Innsbruck often offers an efficient road journey. Verona, Venice, Bergamo, Milan and Munich can also work depending on flights, timing and transfers.
