Italy · Piedmont · Via Lattea

Sestriere and Via Lattea. A vast domain across Italy and France.

A complete Sestriere and Via Lattea guide: sectors, bases, hotels, the Montgenèvre link and access via Turin or Oulx.

Colorado curation

Colorado chooses the right base and organises the mountain for exploring the domain with time and confidence.

Piemonte · Italia & Francia

A vast Alpine domain with many personalities.

Sestriere occupies a plateau at 2,035 metres and serves as Via Lattea’s sporting hub. The network extends through Sansicario, Sauze d’Oulx, Claviere and Pragelato to Montgenèvre in France.

The approximately 400 kilometres are impressive, but the quality of the trip depends on choosing the right base and dividing the mountain realistically. This is a destination to explore, not merely to collect kilometres.

Colorado curation

Large on the map. Better when planned by sector.

Via Lattea alternates high, open pistes in Sestriere, woodland in Sauze, panoramic traverses and a French sector. Not every edge is practical on the same day.

Colorado combines technical level, ski school, hotel, village life and appetite for exploration to choose the base—and builds a flexible plan for the week.

Mountain sectors

Five ways to read Via Lattea.

01

Sestriere · Monte Sises

Open, sunny pistes directly linked to the resort. This is the simplest axis for lessons, first runs and making the most of Sestriere’s altitude.

02

Banchetta · Monte Motta

Sestriere’s more sporting side, with long pistes, Olympic terrain and a stronger mountain feel. Visibility and wind influence the experience.

03

Fraiteve · Sansicario

The strategic link in Via Lattea: from Fraiteve, skiers choose between Sansicario and Sauze d’Oulx or returning to Sestriere. Timing is decisive.

04

Sauze d’Oulx

A wooded sector with enjoyable red pistes and a livelier atmosphere. It is an excellent base for travellers who prefer a historic village and après-ski.

05

Claviere · Montgenèvre

The international link crosses from Italy into France. Set aside a stable operating day and start early: distance, queues and wind can change the plan.

Choosing your base

Where should you stay in Via Lattea?

01

Sestriere

The highest, most sporting and functional base. It provides quick piste access and reliable snow, though its purpose-built architecture has less historic charm.

02

Sauze d’Oulx

An old centre, restaurants and livelier nightlife, with tree-lined skiing. It sits lower and requires more time to reach the Sestriere side.

03

Pragelato

A quiet Val Chisone village with an Alpine atmosphere and Nordic skiing. Club Med is the reference; access to the Alpine domain should be confirmed for each date.

04

Sansicario

A practical slopeside base suited to families and ski-focused groups. Its village, shopping and dining offer is more limited.

05

Claviere

A small border village with natural access to the French sector. It works well for tranquillity and exploring Montgenèvre, but is far from the Sauze end.

Selected accommodation

Slopeside ease or village atmosphere.

Location, shuttle, ski school, wellness and service style vary significantly between bases.

01

Hotel Du Col · Sestriere

A contemporary address in a central position, steps from the pistes. It supports an easy routine between skiing, ski school and the resort.

02

Hotel Cristallo · Sestriere

A four-star hotel facing the pistes, convenient for guests who prioritise location and want to reduce daily transfers.

03

Shackleton Mountain Resort · Sestriere

A warm hotel with personal service and open mountain views. A more intimate alternative in scale.

04

Club Med Pragelato Sestriere

An all-inclusive chalet village, strong for families who value integrated lessons, passes, meals and activities.

05

Chaberton Lodge & Spa · Sauze d’Oulx

A wellness option in Sauze, appealing for combining the historic centre, nightlife and access to the wooded sector.

Torino 2006

An Olympic legacy that still defines the mountain.

Sestriere hosted Alpine skiing events during the 2006 Winter Olympics. Competition pistes on Banchetta and Sises reinforce the destination’s sporting character.

For travellers, this means technical terrain, good group infrastructure and a resort designed around snow—more functional than picturesque.

Arrival and mobility

Turin by air; Oulx by rail.

Sestriere is around 110 kilometres from Turin Airport. The transfer commonly takes about two hours, depending on snow and traffic.

Oulx is the reference railway station for Sauze d’Oulx, Claviere and Sestriere. Within the area, the combination of lifts, local buses and transfers should match the chosen base.

FAQ

Before choosing Sestriere and Via Lattea.

Can you ski the whole Via Lattea in one day?+

It is not a sensible goal. The domain is extensive and links depend on schedules, wind, snow and queues. It is better to organise sectors by day and leave a margin for the return.

Does the pass include Montgenèvre in France?+

Products have different coverage. Inclusion of the French sector and access rules must be checked for the specific pass, season and travel date.

Which base is better: Sestriere or Sauze d’Oulx?+

Sestriere favours altitude, snow and functional piste access. Sauze offers more village charm, trees and après-ski. The group profile and off-mountain priorities determine the choice.

Does the area work for beginners and families?+

Yes, provided the hotel, ski school and meeting point are chosen together. For beginners, long cross-domain links should not be the priority on the first days.

How do you reach Sestriere?+

Turin is the main air gateway. Oulx railway station is also useful for transfers to the Alta Val di Susa bases. Snow and traffic can affect road journey times.
