A complete Vail guide: Front Side, Back Bowls, Blue Sky Basin, Vail Village, Lionshead, selected hotels and access via Eagle or Denver.
Colorado curation
With 5,317 acres, 278 trails and nearly 3,000 acres of Back Bowls, Vail combines one of North America’s largest mountains with pedestrian villages and exceptional hotels.
The Colorado perspective
Vail combines one of North America’s largest single-mountain ski areas with pedestrian villages, exceptional hotels and a daily routine that works without a car.
Its scale demands strategy: the Front Side, Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin are not simply sectors, but distinct stages of the day. The right base and route prevent a great mountain from becoming unnecessarily tiring.

How the mountain works
Progression and orientation
The mountain’s main face combines learning areas, long groomers, trees and direct returns to Vail Village, Golden Peak and Lionshead. It is the clearest place to understand Vail before moving farther.
Vail’s signature
Nearly 3,000 acres of broad bowls create the resort’s defining experience. Sun Up, Sun Down, China, Siberia, Mongolia and Tea Cup change dramatically with visibility, wind and recent snowfall.
Remote mountain character
Glades, ridges and natural-feeling terrain give Vail a more secluded finale. It is strongest for confident intermediates and advanced riders who manage the return time carefully.
Choosing a village
The two car-free centres are a 10–15 minute walk apart and linked by free buses. Their atmosphere and primary gondola access are different, so hotel location should follow the group’s priorities.

Three bases
Dining and classic atmosphere
The covered bridge, pedestrian streets, Gondola One and the strongest dining and luxury-hotel concentration create Vail’s most iconic stay.
Families and convenience
Car-free and organised around Eagle Bahn Gondola, ski school and an ice rink, Lionshead is especially practical for families and first visits.
Ski school and privacy
Close to beginner terrain and the race area, Golden Peak offers quieter luxury residences while remaining walkable to Vail Village.
Colorado hotel selection
