Couples, families and skiers who value a vast mountain, hotels and gastronomy.
Four sectors, 360 km of pistes and an international crossing to Cervinia.
Car-free, elegant and lively, with distinct bases for mountain access.
The Colorado perspective
Zermatt is one of the world’s defining mountain destinations: a car-free village, exceptional hotels, high-altitude skiing and the Matterhorn present throughout the journey.
Its scale demands good planning. The ideal base, lift access and ski-pass choice vary according to ability, weather and the plan to cross to Cervinia.
Mountain profile
Official Matterhorn Ski Paradise reference data. Open terrain and the international link depend on snow, wind and operations.
Figures follow the scope shown above; open terrain varies with conditions.

The mountain
Sunny terrain, memorable Matterhorn views and an excellent profile for intermediates and families.
Cogwheel railway, long pistes and one of the Alps’ great panoramas.
The highest sector, with glacier terrain and the international link to Cervinia.
Long, generally gentler Italian pistes, mountain restaurants and another rhythm to the ski day.
The village
Bahnhofstrasse concentrates shops, restaurants and historic hotels. Winkelmatten and the southern end favour Matterhorn Express, while the slopes above the centre suit Sunnegga. The right location reduces daily friction.

Access
Geneva (GVA) and Zurich (ZRH) are the main gateways. Rail normally takes around 3h30–4h via Visp. Road transfers end in Täsch; the shuttle reaches car-free Zermatt in 12 minutes.

Practical questions
Yes, but the mountain is vast. Beginners benefit from careful hotel selection, lessons and a daily plan that avoids unnecessary crossings.
It is worthwhile when conditions allow the Cervinia link and the group is comfortable covering long distances. Wind can interrupt the crossing.
Sunnegga suits Rothorn; the southern end favours Matterhorn Express; the station and Bahnhofstrasse prioritise arrival, dining and village life.
Zermatt is car-free. Trains connect the Swiss airports via Visp. Drivers stop in Täsch and continue by a 12-minute shuttle or authorised taxi.
Six to eight nights allow time for the different sectors, the Italian crossing and weather flexibility.
